Greene King will be a significant player in the craft beer market in 4 years time.

Yes, they have a whole cotchell of brewery brands, their track record shows that they buy and close and like many big brewing concerns they are stuck in their ways with brands.

but, crazy times we are living in…

maybe I just got out of the wrong side of the bed?

  1. GK have market penetration, estate, distribution, R&D, economy of scale and bargaining power.

As I’ve said in the past, it’s not ‘if’ a regional/national/multinational goes ‘craft’.

It’s when. It’s when the market crosses over.

Whether that’s also the moment when ‘craft’ beer jumps the shark remains to be seen…

  2. I don’t see any inclination on Greene King’s part to compete on the quality of their beers. To me they seem firmly in the hand of the marketing department to whom a cricket sponsorship is much more important than an interesting liquid.

I’d love to see Greene King realise what they’ve got in their own heritage, like Fullers and Thwaites have done, and start doing something with XX Mild and Strong Suffolk. I don’t see any evidence of this happening though. Instead we’re getting Old Golden Hen and IPA pumped out for tuppence a pint.

I wonder what you know that the rest of us don’t.
